In John 14:16 Jesus refer to the Holy Spirit
as advocate. The scripture reads “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help
you and be with you forever “. We can clearly see that another way the Holy
Spirit helps us is by being our advocate.
An Advocate is
one who supports, recommend, or champions for a certain cause or person. During Biblical times when the Romans were in
control the Jewish people where not often familiar with all the Romans laws and
language so sometimes a Roman advocate would be hired (see an example of this
in Acts 24:1). Jesus perhaps used this term to describe one of the functions of
the Holy Spirit because the Jews were familiar with what an advocate did and
how important it would be to have an advocate.
The Holy Spirit can
help us as we seek to understand and know God. While we may not be familiar
with the ways of God He is. He (the Holy Spirit) is not just familiar with the
ways of God but the Holy Spirit is a part of the Trinity. We need the Holy
Spirit to champion for us.
His job is to
help us become deeply intimate with the Father. The Holy Spirit is our advocate He is our
support. We need an advocate who not only knows the heart of the Father but can
make known the heart of the Father to us.
